Why Insulate Now?

Heating and cooling account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American home. As the cost of energy has climbed in the past 20 years, the building codes have changed to increase the levels of energy efficiency for newer homes to reduce homeowner costs and save energy. Utah homes built before 1980 are severely under insulated and new homes are usually insulated below recommended levels.

The current minimum code for attic insulation in the state of Utah is R-38. (The U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-49.) Most Utah homes built before 1980 are insulated to R-19 or less. Several utility companies are now offering cash rebates to assist homeowners to upgrade their attic insulation levels to the minimum code. This allows homeowners to upgrade to the minimum code at a substantially reduced cost and in some cases no cost out-of-pocket after utility rebates.

How Does Insulation Work for You?

Heat flows naturally from a warmer to a cooler space. In the winter, this heat flow moves directly from all heated living spaces to adjacent unheated attics, garages, and basements, or to the outdoors. In the summer, heat flows from the outdoors to the house interior. To maintain comfort, the heat lost in winter must be replaced by your heating system and the heat gained in summer must be removed by your air conditioner. Insulating ceilings, walls, and floors decreases this heat flow by providing an effective resistance to the flow of heat. Insulation is rated in terms of thermal resistance, called R-value, which indicates the resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. The R-value of thermal insulation depends on the type of material, its thickness, and density. Installing more insulation in your home increases R-value and the resistance to heat flow.

Does My Home Qualify for A Utility Company Rebate?

If your home was built before 1980, there is a high probablity it will qualify for a rebate. In some cases, even newer built existing homes may qualify for a rebate. Our field representatives at Sunroc are qualified to inspect your attic spaces to determine the current levels of insulation you have now and will recommend the proper level you need. In addition, Sunroc will assist you in obtaining any utility company rebates that may be available at this time.

Our Insulation division delivers products that minimize energy costs by maximizing the heating and cooling efficiency of homes. We offer Johns Manville fiberglass insulation in batts & rolls, and blown-in Climate Pro and Spider insulation systems.

The Spider and meshed blown Climate Pro fiberglass insulation systems are guaranteed not to settle for the life of a home. These systems also yield an R-15 in a 2x4 cavity and an R-23 in a 2x6 exterior wall cavity. This allows efficient insulation around plumbing pipes, electrical boxes, and imperfect framing. These superior insulation systems result in significant reduction in utility bills both during the summer and the winter.

“Insulation doesn’t cost, it pays.” In many instances, utility companies will help defray the cost of adding more insulation.
