Heating and cooling account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American home. As the cost of energy has climbed in the past 20 years, the building codes have changed to increase the levels of energy efficiency for newer homes to reduce homeowner costs and save energy. Utah homes built before 1980 are severely under insulated and new homes are usually insulated below recommended levels.
The current minimum code for attic insulation in the state of Utah is R-38. (The U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-49.) Most Utah homes built before 1980 are insulated to R-19 or less. Several utility companies are now offering cash rebates to assist homeowners to upgrade their attic insulation levels to the minimum code. This allows homeowners to upgrade to the minimum code at a substantially reduced cost and in some cases no out-of-pocket cost after utility rebates and federal tax credits.
How Does Insulation Work for You?
Heat flows naturally from a warmer to a cooler space. In the winter, this heat flow moves directly from all heated living spaces to adjacent unheated attics, garages, and basements, or to the outdoors. In the summer, heat flows from the outdoors to the house interior. To maintain comfort, the heat lost in winter must be replaced by your heating system and the heat gained in summer must be removed by your air conditioner. Insulating ceilings, walls, and floors decreases this heat flow by providing an effective resistance to the flow of heat. Insulation is rated in terms of thermal resistance, called R-value, which indicates the resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. The R-value of thermal insulation depends on the type of material, its thickness, and density. Installing more insulation in your home increases R-value and the resistance to heat flow.
Does My Home Qualify for A Utility Company Rebate?
In some cases, newer built homes may qualify for a rebate. Our field representatives at Sunroc are qualified to inspect your attic spaces to determine the current levels of insulation you have now and will recommend the proper level you need. In addition, Sunroc will assist you in obtaining any utility company rebates that may be available at this time.
